There’s a lot going on symbolically actually but before i go into it i do just want to say i like this interpretation a lot. Is this type of character normal in this genre?Īnd did anyone else think Buster Scruggs was supernatural in some way? I don't watch westerns a lot, so maybe that's why I misunderstood. So when he got shot in the head I was SO sure he was just going to get up and leave to somewhere else. Must be an animal companion, just like Odin has his ravens.Įven when he started singing about Surly Joe, I thought it was some sort of spell to make people forget that he killed someone right in front of them. I had a whole setting in my head, like, of course he sings, he may not value human life as a God, but he understands and admires our art.Īnd Dan? Obviously not a normal horse. I don't know a lot about mythology, but I think there's a trope about Gods disguising themselves as beggars to test the character of mortals, right? So I thought this was some sort of prankster God that disguised himself as a scrawny singer to mess around with proud and rugged cowboys and outlaws alike. Also, the way he kills makes him look like a force of nature. Then there's the fact that he constantly breaks the fourth wall. This guy is obviously a wanderer, but unlike everybody else his white attire was spotless. It was mostly the canteen scene that gave me this impression. I watched The Ballad of Buster Scruggs for the first time a couple days ago, and for a while I really thought Buster Scruggs was supposed to be a God in that story.
